
SANTA ROSA — Middletown High School senior Grace Southern cracked the top 10 in the junior/senior girls division Saturday during the annual Viking Invitational at Spring Lake in Santa Rosa.
Southern posted the eighth-best time on the challenging 2.0-mile cross country course, finishing in 12 minutes, 49.9 seconds. Race winner Gabrielle Peterson of Healdsburg, also a senior, finished in 11:24.1.
Among other Middletown girls competing at the Viking, freshman Brooklyn Huffman clocked in at 13:16 in the frosh/soph girls division, good for ninth place out of the field of 108 runners, and sophomore Erica Kinsel was 50th in 14:42.1.
Running with Southern in the junior/senior division were teammates Gianna Tyrell, 59th out of 118 runners in 15:11.6; Mariela Martin del Campo, 64th in 15:30.9; and Lilith Engle, 75th in 16:04.7.
Boys
Isaac Rascon posted the best finish by a Middletown boy with a 14th-place time of 11:04.7 in the sophomore race, which featured a field of 118 runners. Also for Middletown, Filemon Sanchez came in 70th (12:40.2) and Isaiah Diaz was 71st (12:41.5).
In the freshman race, Caleb Cobb was 49th overall in 12:52.3 out of 115 runners. In the junior race, Tyler Cobb was 30th in 11:40.2 out of 102 runners.
Middletown opens its Coastal Mountain Conference season Wednesday against Cloverdale in Lower Lake. Action begins at 3:30 p.m.
