UPPER LAKE — The Upper Lake Cougars played a competitive first half before the Point Arena Pirates took control in the second half and went on to win 6-2 in North Central League III boys soccer action on Wednesday afternoon in Upper Lake.

Goals from Benat Love and Jason Martinez kept the Cougars (0-1-1 league, 0-6-1 overall) close in the first half, which ended with Point Arena leading 3-2.

The offense just wasn’t there in the second half for Upper Lake as the Cougars’ midfielders struggled to move the ball forward.

“Again, we’re having problems in the second half with the midfield, I don’t know if it’s conditioning or what,” Upper Lake head coach Kyle Moore said.

Upper Lake keeper Victor Santana had a busy day, according to Moore.

“He was doing more than he should have had to do,” Moore said.

Alex Serrano assisted on Love’s goal, which opened the scoring for the Cougars. Love assisted on the Martinez goal.

The Cougars return to action Friday in Laytonville at 4:30 p.m.
