CLEAR LAKE — The Konocti Bay Sailing Club will hold its annual “Sadie Hawkins” women’s race day on Saturday, September 22. Club member Julie Richardson said Wednesday that that race is held to “encourage women to come out” on the water, noting that while men are allowed on board as crew, only women will be allowed to control the tiller of their vessels.

Interested parties can meet at 11 a.m. at the Tiki Hut in Braito’s Harbor, 1555 Eastlake Dr., Kelseyville, where skippers will decide on crews, boats, and the course for the race-day event. Richardson said that the KBSC will have a handful of 25 foot Catalina Capri race boats as well as a few open hull boats for use.

According to Richardson, the KBSC was started in 1989 by sailors who wanted to continue the legacy of the Konocti Cup, which had been born in 1985. In addition to the Konocti Cup event, the club holds many races throughout the year including the Skipper Scramble—where contestants put their names into a hat from which crews are chosen at random—and the Sadie Hawkins race.

Richardson said she enjoys sailing on Clear Lake because “you don’t have to worry about waves too much, or a tide taking you in some direction” as you would in the San Francisco Bay.

Following the race on Saturday, contestants and their guests are encouraged to bring a dish for a potluck dinner and BBQ.
