Proposition 6 would cost us

Please don’t flush $45 million down the drain. Vote NO on Prop 6. Lake County voters, please be aware of the consequences of your vote. If you repeal the gas tax, which is what Proposition 6 is intended to do, we lose out on $45 million for our road repairs. Where else are we going to get $45 million? Nowhere. The funds do not exist within Lake County budgets. Voting NO on Prop 6 is our only hope for money to repair our roads.

Our Lake County Public Works Director has identified specific roads scheduled for repair, provided the gas tax remains in place. The estimated amount of money we are expected to receive from gas tax revenues is $45 million over ten years. The website www.fixcaroads.com shows the projects. Click on Local Projects tab. For example: Repair the Bachelor Creek Bridge on SR 20 near Upper Lake in Lake County. Also, installing sidewalks along Hartley Street in the City of Lakeport for student safety. Vote NO on Prop 6 so Lake County can get shovels in the ground for these projects!

The gas tax, which was implemented by our legislators under Senate Bill 1 (SB1), has specific language indicating what it can and can’t be used for. It will not be used for high speed rail. I saw an opinion piece published suggesting that the money could be used to give raises to CHP officers and fund the public employees retirement systems. This is simply cynical fear-mongering and outright false.

Criticism that gas tax revenues will be raided and used for other general funds needs is actually addressed in SB1. In the past, when cash was tight, money was borrowed from gas tax funds and transferred to the general fund. Under SB1, all moneys previously borrowed from gas tax funds will be repaid. So not only is further borrowing prohibited, all prior loans must be repaid.

Proposition 6 will only succeed in killing thousands of jobs, and our opportunity to finally fund long overdue bridge and road repairs. Vote NO on Prop 6.

Redbud candidate endorsement

I am endorsing Sandra “Sandy” Richards, candidate for Director, Redbud Health Care District. I have known Sandy for several years and worked closely with her as general secretary of United Methodist Church, Lower Lake.  Sandy is a conscientious, hardworking individual. She has a keen eye for detail and understands the requirements of handling funds. Her attention to accurate record keeping, review of procedure as well as verbal skills will make her an asset to the Health Care District Board.

In defense of Don Anderson

In response to Pollyann Johnston’s October 23 letter to the editor, I was also at that debate and you misrepresented what was said. The question was why you wanted to be judge? Shanda Harry said she always wanted to be a judge, but gave no further meaningful response.

Don Anderson said there are two reasons. First is that he has done all aspects in the justice system. From deputy sheriff, to private attorney and to District Attorney. He said he has accomplished what he set out to do in the DA’s office. He also said at this point the position of judge is best suited for him and the community.

Don Anderson then said the second reason is something you will not hear from any other candidate. He said it was for financial reason. His salary would increase by $70,000 a year and his retirement would double. This has to be a motivating factor for any working person.

Shanda Harry claims she has not considered the $130,000 a year raise she will receive and having her retirement jump from a little over $3,000 a month to over $18,000 a month.

Now you must ask: who is being truthful and who is not?

Two cents in support of Shanda Harry

We would like to thank all the voters that voted for Shanda last time. She has proven to be a lady that is smart the voters realized it and voted for her. That was totally appreciated by many many voters. Now the time has come after she won many votes before to recognize that she still needs your vote to sit in the judge’s chair to do an excellent job for the people of California and/or all the people of Lake County. She will be a judge that shines like a star and we need your vote now like we had in the past and I would like to talk to all the men first and all the women second.

When you sit down at the table for dinner with the family and your wife I would like you to have a family discussion regarding a vote for a lady as our new judge. She has already been endorsed by many educated and smart people. I would like you men out there to respect your wife and respect a woman to be our new judge. Remember she has you in mind at a later time.

All you ladies out there should support another woman to be our new judge. Because she is one of you and one of us and at a later time you will be more than proud you did.

If you are a man and you have a man for a wife that would be your choice. But if you are a man and have a woman for a wife all you men voters out their need to stand up for your family woman and support her with your vote to help her vote count.

I have only remembered one woman in the past which was judge, her name was Betty Erwin and she proved to be an excellent choice because women are always doers. Men meditate and women always get the job done.  That is why all men have women in their lives they can always depend on as a wife a mother a cook and women are always important in a man’s life.

I believe it is time for all men and all women to think positively and make the right decision and a vote for Shanda Harry. Look around you and think about a woman with talent, sharp minded we have many in our county. Melissa Fulton, manager of the Chamber of Commerce a doer. We have a lady running the farm bureau; we have many women in agricultural that are very bright ladies. A lady supervisor, Tina Scott; Carol Huchingson, basically the CEO of our county; and now we have a woman running our community development that was just appointed. So that tells you that the women in Lake County are smart, business minded get ‘er done kind of people. And this is why you should vote for a woman judge. She needs your vote to succeed. At a later time you will be more than proud that you voted for her. It is time for all my men friends and maybe a few enemies to think smart and put a woman first again.
