Early Nov. 8, the Camp Fire sparked to life in a remote Butte County canyon. Within hours it roared across thousands of acres; within a day it leveled the town of Paradise, sending tens of thousands scrambling for their lives.
Seventeen days after it began, the Camp Fire was declared 100 percent contained — under control — on Sunday, Nov. 25. The fire has taken at least 88 lives with hundreds still missing.
More than 18,000 structures have been destroyed — including an estimated 90 percent of the town of Paradise.
Paradise drew retirees from across the West. More than one-quarter of its residents were over 65.
Not much remained, but Ryan and Kim Spainhower found a pressed coin from their honeymoon with the inscription, “Kim & Ryan soulmates 4ever. Good Luck.”
“So many have said, well, there’s nothing left of Paradise,” Mayor Jody Jones reflected, but “there’s really a core to build on.”
