LARKSPUR — Unseeded Hugo Salazar of Lower Lake High School placed third in the 145-pound division during the Redwood Rumble on Saturday at Redwood High School in Larkspur.
Salazar was one of five Lower Lake veteran wrestlers competing in the season-opening event. He went 3-1 with one pin. Teammate Mario Cuellar, the No. 2 seed at 145 pounds, lost his first match and under tournament rules could do no better than seventh place, which is where he finished with a 1-1 record and one pin.
Lower Lake also entered two wrestlers at 132 pounds. Tristan Day, the No. 3 seed, ended up fourth with a 2-2 record and one pin. Pedro Garrido placed sixth with a 2-3 record and one pin.
Also for the Trojans, Kyle Lynn finished fifth at 160 pounds with a 3-2 record that included two pins.
The top eight wrestlers in each weight division brought home medals.
With only Day, Cuellar and Lynn officially scoring for the Trojans, Lower Lake placed 12th out of the 19 teams entered.
“Twelfth out of 19 with only three wrestlers scoring, that’s pretty good,” Lower Lake coach Ed Fuchs said. “Most teams sent eight or nine guys.”
On Friday, Lower Lake’s newer wrestlers took part in the Coastal Mountain Conference Novice Tournament at Willits High School. Four Trojans brought home first-place medals and two others came in second.
Winning their weight classes were Bob Cruz, 2-0 with one pin at 120 pounds; Jose Medina, 3-0 with three pins at 126 pounds; Tony Guerrero, 2-0 with one pin at 132 pounds; and Isaac Huffman, 1-0 with one pin in the heavyweight division.
Second-place finishes went to Jeremiah Smith, 2-1 with one pin at 132 pins; and to Gilbert Orozco, 2-1 with one pin at 152 pounds.
In the girls division, Kenya Atrisco went 1-2 with one pin to finish third at 113 pounds, and Amethyst McCoy went 0-3 at 150 pounds.
“We’ve got some quick learners that ask a lot of good questions,” Fuchs said of the newest members of the Lower Lake squad.
Lower Lake has a non-conference dual match with Healdsburg on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The Trojans resume tournament action Saturday when the girls and junior varsity boys take part in the Clayton Valley Shootout while the varsity boys are in the Bay Area 56 at Castro Valley.
