LOWER LAKE — For a half on Monday night, the Lower Lake High School varsity girls basketball team did its best impression of the Golden State Warriors, sinking 3-pointer after 3-pointer in a 47-29 non-league victory over the Upper Lake Cougars at Lower Lake High School.
Lower Lake (2-6) sank nine of its 12 treys in the second half to turn a competitive game into a one-sided affair. The Trojans trailed 9-6 after one quarter but pushed in front 16-15 by halftime. They went on to outscore the Cougars 31-14 in the second half.
“The biggest difference was our shots started to fall in the second half,” Lower Lake head coach Dave Milano said. “Our ball movement also got a little better in the second half.
The Trojans lost all of last season’s starters to graduation and are basically starting over with a new group of players. Point guard Lynzi Milano led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, Jackie Cooper and Jordan Rivera had nine apiece, and Alisha Jones added eight. Milano, Cooper and Rivera each had three 3-pointers while Samantha Hughes sank two.
Milano said Lower Lake’s job became a bit easier in the second half when Upper Lake’s Cheyanne Obedoza left the game with an ankle injury.
“She was playing pretty well for them,” Milano said.
Kaila Willard’s eight points led the Cougars (4-6) while Katlyn Minnis and Alana Sanchez chipped in six points each.
“Upper Lake came out and played well,” Milano said.
The Trojans are on the road Thursday to play Analy High School in Sebastopol, and they’re away Saturday to play Rio Americana at Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord. The Cougars visit Calistoga on Tuesday night.
