The Camp Fire destruction is horrifying enough from the ground. The enormity of the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history is even more overwhelming from the air, where hillside after hillside was blackened by a fire that burned almost 15 percent of a very large county.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea and pilot James Marshall took a one-hour flight over the damaged area Thursday. These are some of the images taken by photographer Karl Mondon.
