PETALUMA — Coming off a second-place finish in the Corning Sweet 16 tournament last weekend, the Middletown High School junior varsity girls basketball team dropped a 47-37 decision to Casa Grande in non-league action Tuesday night in Petaluma.
“We were a little lethargic after all the traveling we did last week,” Middletown coach Andy Brown said. “We left about 10 points off the board in the first quarter.”
Olivia Kucer’s eight points paced the Mustangs, now 3-2 on the season. Brooklyn Huffman and Jordan Sullivan added seven points apiece.
The Mustangs are home Thursday night to play Rodriguez in a non-league game. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
In other JV basketball action Tuesday:
JV boys
Kelseyville 48, El Molino 31
At Kelseyville, Jake Keithly poured in 25 points and Cory Holt finished with 17 as the Kelseyville Knights, fresh off their tournament victory at Willits, knocked off the El Molino Lions.
Jaalon Terry had 11 points for Kelseyville.
Maria Carrillo 55, Clear Lake 53
At Santa Rosa, the Maria Carrillo Pumas rallied from a 30-18 halftime deficit to beat the Clear Lake Cardinals.
Clear Lake’s inability to sink free throws was a major factor in the loss as the Cardinals (5-2) were just 8-for-24 from the line.
“We didn’t make our free throws,” Clear Lake coach Phil Psalmonds said. “If we make 50 percent, we win, and 50 percent isn’t good.”
Clear Lake nursed a 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold it.
Treppa Marcks led the Cardinals with 12 points while Ethan Maize and Evan Coakley each had nine.
Clear Lake plays St. Bernard on Friday in Eureka at 5:30 p.m.
