
PITTSBURG — Adriana Lopez closed out 2018 on a high note by winning her weight class Saturday at the Queen of the Mat tournament in Pittsburg.
The standout Upper Lake High School senior made quick work of the opposition in the 126-pound division, winning all three of her matches. Facing a Castro Valley opponent in the championship match, Lopez began the third period tied at 5. Lopez chose the down position, earned an escape point to grab at 6-5 lead, then secured the victory with a two-point takedown and three-point nearfall to win 11-5.
In addition to winning the 126-pound title, Lopez was named the tournament’s outstanding lightweight as she improved her season record to 16-1.
Among other Upper Lake wrestlers competing in the Queen of the Mat, Dena Loans Arrow went 3-1 at 121 pounds and secured a fifth-place finish; Laylah Medina went 1-3 at 126 pounds; Isabel Sanchez went 0-2 at 121 pounds; and Jessica Lee went 0-3 at 170 pounds.
Upper Lake’s girls return to action Friday at the Napa Valley Classic, which runs through Saturday. The majority of Upper Lake’s boys compete in the Dennis Jensen Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Middletown High School while senior standout Junior Fernandez, who is undefeated (13-0) and has yet to allow a point this season, takes part in the ultra-competitive Doc Buchanan Tournament Friday and Saturday in Clovis.
Upper Lake hosts Clear Lake and Middletown in a Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet on Jan. 9 at 5 p.m.
