
HUMBOLDT COUNTY — A blaze that began in the afternoon on New Year’s Day is now completely contained, according to the latest report from Cal Fire.
The Pilot Fire is reported to have broken out at 2:14 p.m. Jan. 1, at the junction of Pilot Ridge Road and Forest Service Route 1, southwest of the town of Willow Creek.
Cal Fire’s report at 7:39 a.m. Wednesday showed the fire to be 60 percent contained, having burned 30 acres at that time.
Cal Fire Humboldt-DelNorte Unit Assistant Chief Jonni Mayberry late Wednesday morning that the fire was expected to be contained by Jan. 3. Just one engine, two fire crews and one helicopter were managing the blaze at that time, she said. Initial response, she said, had been two engines, two fire crews and one helicopter.
By 1:56 p.m., Cal Fire reported the fire to be 100 percent contained at 30 acres.
Mayberry said no structures had been destroyed as the fire is located “about one mile away from the nearest structure.”
Mayberry added that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
