CLEARLAKE — Sign-ups are underway for a 100-percent payback crappie tournament set for Jan. 26 on Clear Lake.

Based on a full field of 50 teams, each team paying $60 to enter, the winners would take home a $1,000 prize. The top five teams finish in the money, which includes $800 for second place, $500 for third, $400 for fourth, and $300 for fifth. All payouts are based on a full field of 50 teams.

Fishermen blast off at 8 a.m. and weigh in at 3 p.m. There is a 10-fish limit with a 12-inch minimum length. No dead fish will be weighed in and all fish will be released following the weigh-in.

You can sign up at Limit Out Bait & Tackle, the tournament’s headquarters, at 12607 E. Highway 20, in Clearlake Oaks.

Two- and 3-pound crappie are often caught at Clear Lake, which has the distinction of holding the state record for white crappie, a 4-pound, 8-ounce fish caught in 1971 by Carol Carlton. The world record for white crappie is 5 pounds, 3 ounces while the world record for black crappie is 6 pounds, 5 ounches.

Pornell Williamson Jr. of Oakland caught a 4-pound, 4-ounce black crappie on March 29 at Indian Beach Resort in Clearlake Oaks.
