UPPER LAKE — The Lower Lake Trojans improved to 3-0 in the Coastal Mountain Conference wrestling standings with a 33-22 victory over the Upper Lake Cougars on Wednesday night in Upper Lake.
Seven weight divisions were contested between the two teams while the other seven resulted in forfeits or double-forfeits.
Lower Lake winners were Tristan Day by 6-2 decision over Adriana Lopez at 132 pounds; Hugo Salazar by third-round pin over Alex Serrano at 138 pounds; Jesse Castellanos by second-round pin over Robby Harper at 152 pounds; and Mateo McKay by first-round pin over Jessica Lee at 170 pounds.
Upper Lake winners were Cody Banks by 9-1 decision over Pedro Garrido at 126 pounds; Junior Fernandez by second-round pin over Mario Cuellar at 145 pounds; and Bradley Sneathen by first-round pin over Wesley Dobson at 182 pounds.
It was the first match back for Fernandez since he sustained a concussion in the semifinals of the Doc Buchanan Invitational on Jan. 5 in Clovis. The third-ranked 132-pounder in the state moved up two weight divisions to take on Cuellar and had a 9-2 lead when he finally pinned his Lower Lake opponent.
“Junior was just too strong,” Lower Lake coach Ed Fuchs said. “It’s going to be strange when he’s not around next year. I’m going to miss him.”
Fernandez, a senior, will be wrestling for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo come this time next year.
Lower Lake’s boys return to action Saturday in the Corning Invitational. The Trojans’ next CMC match is next Wednesday in Middletown where they’ll battle both the host Mustangs and the Kelseyville Knights. Upper Lake’s boys travel to Santa Rosa on Saturday to participate in the Puma Classic at Maria Carrillo High School. The Cougars’ next CMC action is Wednesday at home against Willits and Fort Bragg.
