KELSEYVILLE — According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation has been taken up by the District Attorney into an incident wherein, allegedly, a man fired a handgun into the vehicle of three or four other men who were lost trying to find their friend’s house.
On Feb. 16 at 9 p.m., Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a residence located in the 9800 block of Diener Drive in Kelseyville, Lieutenant Corey Paulich writes in a statement released Tuesday. Trevor McAfee, 29, the homeowner at the address, reported he had discharged his handgun at four males who came to his property and pointed a firearm at him. “McAfee reported that the four males had fled on foot,” Paulich writes.
Paulich writes that deputies later spoke to David Brooks, who reported that the men who had fled McAfee’s property were his friends, and had been trying to find Brooks’ property.
“Brooks reported his friends had gotten lost while coming to visit him at his home located on Seigler Springs Road North,” Paulich writes. “His friends went to the wrong property and were shot at. Brooks had located two of his friends running down the road and waited for deputies near Diamond Dust Trail and Hwy. 175. Brooks told deputies that earlier he was at his residence speaking to his friends on the phone. He was explaining to them that they were at the wrong residence. He could hear someone yelling at them and told them to give the phone to the person yelling at them. He then heard several gunshots while on the phone. He traveled to the area and located his friends running down the road.”
Sheriff’s deputies, with help from California Highway Patrol, later contacted McAfee at his home. “McAfee’s residence was located several miles out an unmaintained road with several gates,” Paulich writes. “McAfee told deputies he heard a loud vehicle outside his trailer. He went outside with his handgun and saw four males walking towards him. He told the males to get off his property and they refused. The driver of the vehicle pointed a silver revolver at him so he fired two or three shots and all the males ran away.”
The deputies then examined the vehicle that had been left at McAfee’s property, and found what appeared to be bullet holes in the vehicle, a silver Toyota Matrix. Deputies found no firearms or ammunition in the vehicle.
Paulich adds that deputies were able to speak to the men who fled McAfee’s property. The three men contacted were between 23 and 35 years old. According to Paulich, “the males told deputies they had travelled from the Oakland area to visit Brooks. They tried to use their GPS, but ended up at McAfee’s residence. McAfee was yelling at them to leave. They were on the phone with Brooks and tried to explain to McAfee that they were lost. When they tried to hand the cell phone to McAfee he started shooting at them and they ran away. The males told deputies they never had a firearm.” Paulich noted that the victims’ listed residences were indeed located in Oakland.
Paulich writes that the District Attorney’s Office is conducting a review of the incident, and will make a determination of criminal charges. Paulich noted Tuesday that the sheriff’s office had had little contact with McAfee prior to this incident, and listed no prior arrests. Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 707-263-2690.
