CLEARLAKE — The Lake County Campus of Woodland Community College is honoring Black History Month with a community event, daily inspiration quotes on the Facebook page, and a multimedia library exhibit.
The Praises of Zion Choir and community leader, Randall Cole, will give guest performances on Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 11:30am to 1 p.m. in room 211 of the Culinary Arts building. A soul food menu will be offered for purchase by Aromas Restaurant.
Inspirational quotes and pictures by historical figures are posted daily on the Lake County Campus Facebook page during February. The post for Feb. 7 was, “Real Education means to inspire people to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make it better,” by Carter G. Woodson in his 1933 book, The Mis-Education of the Negro. In 1926, Woodson initiated the celebration of “Negro History Week” which later became Black History Month.
The Lake County Campus Library hosts “Black Migrations through Music,” a multimedia exhibit , located on the second floor of the Administration Building, 15880 Dam Rd Extension, Clearlake. The exhibit highlights the often unknown yet pivotal musicians who profoundly influenced the music and musicians listened to today.
Who came up with Jazz music anyway? Buddy Bolden, developed a new style of ragtime rhythm in the 1900s called “jass” with his cornet (an instrument similar to the trumpet) that quickly grew in popularity, eventually forming into “jazz” music. Who taught Cab Calloway to “Ho De Ho De Ho?” None other than his older sister, Blanche Calloway, who was an accomplished jazz singer, composer, and bandleader for over fifty years. Some say jazz is dead, but modern artists like Jason Moran, explosive avant-garde piano player, and Esperanza Spalding, upright bass playing lead vocalist, prove the contrary.
The “Black Migrations through Music” exhibit is accompanied by a YouTube playlist of performances, interviews, and short documentaries from each of the twelve featured artists. Visitors can listen to the playlist on their smartphones while inside the library at the beginning of the exhibit. Library hours are Monday – Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
