MIDDLETOWN— Join artist John Jennings for a block-printing workshop this Sunday, March 3 from 1 to 5 p.m. Participants can choose to create linocuts or woodcuts this session. Adults and teens (12-up) of all levels of art making experience, from newbies to professionals, are invited to join the class for just $5.
“In my journeys through the various modes of printmaking, I’ve found none quite as dynamic as relief printing, whether linocuts or working on wood,” explains Jennings. “We will explore the range of possibilities from vigorous to delicate lines and the play of light and shadow in defining our two dimensional space. In our class I hope to introduce the participant to the magic of relief printing: from the drawing stage to the transfer of the drawing to the linoleum block, to the carving of the block to printing of the image. The thrill of pulling the rice paper off the block and seeing your work in ink on the page is like no other.”
Please register in advance for all RESTORE classes at www.middletownartcenter.org/restore, email middletownartcenter@gmail.com, or call 707-809-8118. Space is limited and reservations are required.
Works from Printmaking classes will contribute to MAC’s second chapbook of writings and images, as well as RESTORE exhibitions. The first chapbook, Resilience – a community reframes disaster through art, is available for purchase at MAC or on the MAC website. You can preview the book online.
The RESTORE project provides low-cost classes most weekends through May 2019 in Printmaking, Mixed Media, Sculpture and Creative Writing. While all classes are open to the public to attend one or many times, MAC encourages folks to come to several classes, to hone skills, learn new ones, develop a body of work and participate in a collaborative sculptural project for Rabbit Hill. Learn more about RESTORE classes and scheduling at middletownartcenter.org/restore.
On Saturday March 9 from 1-5pm, RESTORE features concrete sculpture with Emily Sheibal with a focus on sculptural explorations for the Rabbit Hill project. On Sunday March 17, 1-5pm Laura Kennedy will lead a 2D Mixed Media workshop entitled “Love and Loss”. And on Saturday March 23, Clive Matson will return for Writers’ Workshop from 1-5pm, followed by a Spoken Word Gathering from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please visit middletownartcenter.org/restore, to stay up to date on RESTORE class schedules and to preregister. On Saturday, March 2 MAC is also offering a Life Drawing Open Studio from 11am to 1pm. Visit the ‘classes’ page on the MAC Website to learn more and RSVP.
The RESTORE project was made possible thanks to support from the California Arts Council, a state agency, with additional support from local organizations, businesses, and individuals.
