CRESCENT CITY — The Mountain Vista Middle School “A” boys basketball team of Kelseyville won all three of its games Friday and Saturday to claim the championship in the A2 Division during the 51st annual Crescent City Jaycees Boys Basketball Tournament.

It’s the second straight year and the seventh time overall Mountain Vista’s “A” team has finished first in the tournament, which draws middle school teams from throughout Northern California and Oregon.

Kelseyville defeated Toddy Thomas Middle School of Fortuna 69-52 in the championship game behind 16 points from Luke Watkins, 14 from Joey Gentle and 11 each from Daniel Farris and David Bader.

Mountain Vista advanced to the finals after beating Fieldbrook Middle School of McKinleyville 60-49 in the semifinals. Farris led the way with 20 points, Gentle added 17, Zack Cumins had 10 and Earl Lingcong six. Outstanding defense by Cumins and Lingcong, who played sick the entire tournament, also figured heavily in the win.

In a first-round game, Mountain Vista beat Bethel Christian of Redding 67-53. Farris led all scorers with 22 points, Cumins added 15 and Gentle and Watkins each had 10. Gentle hit a half-court buzzer-beater to end the first half and give the Lancers the lead.

Also scoring for Mountain Vista during the course of the tournament were Colby Miller, Andrew Huggins and Zayne Barker.

All-Tournament honors, voted on by the coaches in Mountain Vista’s division, went to Cumins and Lingcong.
