FRESNO — Adam Viramontes, a member of the CORE Wrestling Club of Lower Lake, is the first wrestler in the club’s history to win a USA Wrestling state medal after placing seventh in the 149-pound division during the Kids Folkstyle State Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Fresno.

Viramontes was one of nine CORE wrestlers who made the trip to Fresno. It’s the second year the club has competed in the event but Viramontes is the first CORE wrestler to reach the medal podium.

During his two days of competition, Viramontes’ only losses came to wrestlers who went on to place second and third in his weight division.

Two other CORE wrestlers had outstanding tournament runs but just missed reaching the medal podium in their respective divisions. Quinten Vilmenay, competing at 97 pounds, lost to the eventual fourth- and eighth-place medalists, and Nick Celli, competing at 114 pounds, lost to the eventual second- and fourth-place medalists.

“Lessons were learned and we are definitely excited to go back next year,” CORE coach Ed Fuchs said.

CORE wrestlers are on the road Saturday when they visit Healdsburg High School for a Coastal Mountain tournament.
