New Aerobics Classes at the Highlands Senior Center

Vivian Ferreira has been participating in aerobics for over 10 years and is currently a school teacher with Konocti Unified School District.

“Her experience with teaching and her energy will bring exercising here at the center to a new level,” said senior center director Joyce Overton.  “She’s high energy, but low impact exercise makes this class fun to participate in. You will leave with a positive attitude and energized to continue your day.”

The program is open to the public with a suggested donation of $3, but no one is turned away on the bases of payment.

Classes are Monday and Friday from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.

Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry rallies for bill to boost local Investment in infrastructure and affordable housing

Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D – Winters) is holding a press conference and rally today in support of her bill, ACA 1. She will be joined by coauthoring legislators and advocates for local governments, housing, labor, public safety, transportation, and conservation.

ACA 1 would reduce the local vote threshold for approval of bond and special tax measures from a two-thirds vote to a 55 percent supermajority. This is the same vote threshold that currently applies to all local school construction bond measures. By making this change, ACA 1 puts housing and infrastructure projects on par with school proposals, so that cities, counties, and special districts have a practical financing tool to address community needs.

The Housing Committee Chairs from each Chamber, Senator Scott Wiener and Assemblymember David Chiu, have joined as Principal Coauthors to ACA 1.

Other members of the Legislature who have coauthored include Senators Jim Beall, Jerry Hill, and Nancy Skinner, Assemblymembers Marc Berman, Richard Bloom, Tasha Boerner Horvath, among numerous others.

Public meeting dealing with local hazard mitigation plan

A Local Hazard Mitigation Plan is being developed by the City of Lakeport.  Fires, drought, floods, and severe weather are just a few of the hazards to be addressed in the plan. While hazards such as these cannot be prevented, a Hazard Mitigation Plan forms the foundation for a community’s long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses by breaking the repeated cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction. Additionally, only communities with a FEMA-approved Hazard Mitigation Plan are eligible to apply for both pre- and post-disaster mitigation grant funding.

The community is seeking all interested community members to hear more about our local hazard mitigation planning project. We encourage attendance and participation from the general public at our upcoming public meeting regarding mitigation strategy: April 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. at City Hall, Council Chambers, 225 Park Street, Lakeport. For additional information, please contact Michelle Humphrey at (707) 263-3578 or email at mhumphrey@cityoflakeport.com
