Free programs at Lake County Library branches

The Lake County Library will host three free programs on “Reversing Global Warming: Introduction to Drawdown” around Lake County in coming weeks. Presenter Carol Cole-Lewis will be the facilitator for Pachamama Alliance, a global community that offers people the chance to learn, connect, engage, travel and cherish life for the purpose of creating a sustainable future that works for all.

The first program is scheduled for April 17 at 5 p.m. at Lakeport Library, 1425 N. High Street. Middletown Library will host a program on April 27 at 10 a.m. The library is located at 21256 Washington Street in Middletown. The final program will be held at Redbud Library 14785, Burns Valley Rd. in Clearlake on May 18 at 10 a.m.

Cole-Lewis says, “The presentation will begin to explore how we all can participate (and are already participating) in Drawdown efforts, both individually and collectively as a Lake County community.”

According to Pachamama. Alliance, “Drawdown is the point at which we begin to reverse climate change by drawing down the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This ground-breaking scientific study of the 100 most effective Drawdown strategies, including their projected financial impacts, is summarized in Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Global Warming, a new book edited by Paul Hawken and available through the Lake County Library. This is a hopeful and scientifically grounded conversation about the possibility of working together to actually reverse the damage done to our beloved planet. Many of the solutions are things we would want to do anyway, and they offer exciting opportunities to learn and grow in our ability to care for each other and the world.”

LAKE COUNTY

Supervisors Appoint Dr. Erin Gustafson Permanent Public Health Officer

On Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors acted to install Dr. Erin Gustafson as permanent Public Health Officer (PHO).  Dr. Gustafson was initially appointed Lake County’s Deputy PHO in November 2017, and elevated to Interim PHO in October 2018.

“This is an important step for the County of Lake,” shares Board Chair, Tina Scott.  “Dr. Gustafson has the background and quality of character required to encourage better population health outcomes.  We hope many will get the chance to meet Erin at our next round of Community Visioning Forums, which will focus upon health and wellness.”

Gustafson holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Kansas State University and an MD from the University of Kansas’ School of Medicine.  She completed two years of residency training in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Orange County/UC Irvine before her passion for population health led her to Preventive Medicine.  Public Health has been her consistent focus, ever since.

“The Board’s Vision, ‘Considering and promoting the well-being and economic resilience of every Lake County resident,’ will require broad contributions from within and outside of the County,” acknowledges Gustafson.  “I look forward to continuing to lead through open communication and collaboration with strategic partners.”
