BUCKINGHAM — Playing only nine holes instead of the usual 18 because of wet conditions, the golfers of the Coastal Mountain Conference North teed it up Thursday at Buckingham Golf and Country Club where Fort Bragg won its second straight match.

The Timberwolves finished with a team score of 217 (the total of their four low individual rounds) to beat the Willits Wolverines (225) by eight strokes. Lower Lake beat Clear Lake in a tight battle for third place, 244-246, and Mendocino was fifth with 264. Point Arena was unable to attend the match.

With the Buckingham course playing to a par of 36 for nine holes, Fort Bragg’s Elijah Hill fired the low round, a 53, followed by Willits’ Nate Maples at 49, Lower Lake’s Mike Taliaferro at 53, Fort Bragg’s Clay Anderson at 55, and Clear Lake’s Jacob Lopez at 56.

Other low rounds for Lake County golfers in the field went to Lower Lake’s Gavin Watson with a 58 and to Clear Lake’s Nathon Lopez with a 62, including a birdie on the par-4 first hole.

“It was his very first birdie,” Clear Lake coach Ted Mattila said.

Other individual scores were not available.

The start of the match was delayed an hour because of weather conditions.
“We were OK to start and there were some sprinkles during the match,” Mattila said. “The course was pretty soaked. It has good drainage but it can only handle so much water.”

Mattila said he was impressed with the 56 of Clear Lake’s Jacob Lopez.

“He was very consistent,” Mattila said. “All of his practice is paying off.”

The CMC North returns to action Wednesday in Willits at Brooktrails Golf Course.
