RENO — Chalk up another first for Adam Viramontes of Lower Lake’s CORE Wrestling Club.

After winning the first state medal in the club’s history earlier this season, Viramontes became CORE’s first member to bring home a medal from the Reno World Championships, a feat he achieved last weekend by placing sixth in the 12-and-under 145-pound weight class.

In a field of 16 wrestlers from throughout the country, Viramontes posted a 2-3 record during the four-day-long tournament, which took place at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

Viramontes opened the competition with two straight victories to reach the semifinals where he lost to the eventual runner-up in his division. He lost again in the consolation semifinals to fall into the fifth-place match, which he also dropped.

“Although finishing sixth after being in the semis is not the ideal plan, Adam still earned a (Reno) Worlds medal and we are extremely proud of his hard work,” CORE head coach Ed Fuchs said.

Viramontes was one of seven CORE wrestlers to compete in Reno. Just missing out on a top-six finish and medal was Mason Fuchs, who went 2-2 in the 6-and-under 40-pound division.

The Reno World Championships closed out the 2018-19 season for CORE Wrestling.
