ROHNERT PARK — John Berry’s tube of sunscreen was in huge demand Tuesday afternoon as the Coastal Mountain Conference South golf teams, including Berry’s Kelseyville Knights as well as the Middletown Mustangs, teed it up the par-72 Foxtail South course in Rohnert Park.
The CMC South golfers haven’t had to worry about excessive sun exposure during what has been a rainy and cold spring season, but the temperature on Tuesday reached the mid-80s in Rohnert Park with a light breeze to keep conditions from becoming too hot.
“The course played firm and the greens were fast,” Berry said.
Undefeated league leader St. Vincent continued its CMC South mastery with a fifth straight match win, finishing with a team round of 336 (the combined rounds of the four lowest scorers). St. Helena was next at 375 followed by Middletown with 398, Kelseyville with 407, Credo with 449 and Tech with 507. Geyserville was a no-show once again (the Bronchos haven’t attended a match all season).
The day’s low round went to St. Vincent’s Bennett Adams with a 80. Mason Ellis of St. Helena was the only non-St. Vincent golfer to crack 90 as he finished with 89. Middletown’s Derek Coulter just missed at 90 while Kelseyville’s Cory Holt and Lalo Sepulveda finished with 95 and 96, respectively. Credo’s Wyatt Kinney fired a 98.
Berry credited one of his own golfers, Cody Horning, with a solid round.
“He’s been around the 120s but today he had 105,” Berry said. “That’s a really good round by Cody. He had a 49 on the back nine. He’s a good athlete but he’s new at golf.”
The first half of the CMC South Championships takes place Thursday at Windsor Golf Club.
