CLEAR LAKE — The 35th annual Konocti Cup Regatta will bring stiff competition to the waters of Clear Lake this Saturday.
The event begins at 11 a.m. at Konocti Bay Sailing Club’s headquarters at Braito’s Marina on the Buckingham peninsula.
According to the KBSC’s website, all would-be competitors must register online by Friday, April 26 or at the club’s headquarters on the morning of the race, Saturday, April 27.
The Konocti Cup Regatta is the KBSC’s biggest race of the year.
The cup’s origins date back to 1984, according to the club, “when four Clear Lake sailors who had participated in a regatta on Folsom Lake, decided to hold a regatta on Clear Lake. The Lakeport Yacht Club put on the regatta for the next four years, but then decided not to continue holding the race. So several members split off, gathered other sailors, and formed the Konocti Bay Sailing Club which has continued the Konocti Cup Regatta ever since. Joe Mazzola, of the Konocti Harbor Inn, wanted to promote sailing on the lower end of Clear Lake. The Konocti Cup sailed out of the Konocti Harbor marina until the race moved to Konocti Bay Sailing Club’s headquarters at Braito’s Marina on Buckingham peninsula.”
The Regatta is now held every year on the fourth Saturday in April. The Full Cup race course is 26 miles long while the Half Cup is 13 miles.
Sailing instructions will be made available at the KBSC headquarters on Friday and are available online at http://www.kbsail.org.
Following the race, prizes will be distributed at Sunday morning awards brunch, April 28, 2019 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Riviera Hills Restaurant, 10200 Fairway Drive in Kelseyville.
