UPPER LAKE— The Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club will host their annual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, July 21st. Ice cream sundaes are served on the patio at the Tallman Hotel courtyard from 3 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the Tallman Hotel, Lake County Wine Studio and at the function that day.
The Upper Lake Women’s Protective Club was founded in 1913. Their initial purpose was to protect the water rights to Clear Lake. When
that initiative failed, they began to focus locally. They opened a lending library in a local hardware store. Then, founding member Harriet Lee Hammond, who was sister in law to Theodore Roosevelt, obtained funding for a proper local library. The library was completed and dedicated in 1916, and named in her honor.
After more than 100 years, the ladies still meet monthly from October to June. They raise money for maintenance in the library and other local needs. They also provide a scholarship to a graduating senior at Upper Lake High School.
The Ice Cream Social is one of several events that helps with their funding. It is a great afternoon. For more information about the fund-
raiser event or the club call President Dana Di Ricco at 707-328-3858.
