Community Day of HOPE Slated

The Lake Family Resource Center’s California HOPE (Lake FRC Cal HOPE) project is hosting a Community Day of HOPE on Saturday, Aug.17, 2019 from 8 A.M. to 2 P.M. at the Highlands Springs Park and Recreation Area, 3600 Highlands Springs Road, Lakeport. The event includes an early morning hike around the lake, swimming, picnicking and an ice cream social and is open to the public. All are welcome to attend whether participating in one or all of the activities planned for the day.

The Community Day of HOPE begins with a self-led hike around Highlands Springs Reservoir at 8 A.M. The hike starts at the picnic area and community members are welcome to hike any portion of the Lake Trail. The Highland Springs area is characterized by scrub brush, oak woodland and open range land. The trail is moderately hilly, and offers views of Mt. Konocti. Hikers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and bring sun block, a sun hat and a reusable water bottle. Water and snacks will be provided along the route. Poison oak and snakes are common in this area. Participants will receive their choice of a free water bottle or t-shirt while supplies last.

Swimming at the picnic area is open any time and swimmers are encouraged to bring water shoes, sunblock and a towel. There is no life guard on duty at the reservoir.

Attendees will need to bring their own lunch for the community picnic at noon. in the picnic area under the trees. Some tables, chairs and blankets will be provided, but people are encouraged to bring their own. Water and snacks will be provided.

The ice cream social begins at 1 P.M. and various flavors of ice cream served on cones will be provided.

The theme for the day is ‘There is hope for recovery in a community that supports one another,’ and is sponsored by LARCA Fire Relief, Adventist Health Clear Lake, North Coast Opportunities, the Sierra Club Lake Group, Robinson Rancheria, Dennis Smith and Bonnie Cobbs.

The ‘Banner of HOPE’ that was initiated at the Lake FRC’s Cal HOPE Hike of HOPE earlier this year will also be on display and available for attendees to add their visions and hope for Lake County. “Signing the banner has really been an uplifting thing for most people,” noted Lake FRC Cal HOPE Team Lead, JoAnn Saccato. “Something about actively thinking about it and putting ‘pen to paper,’ as it were, really helps solidify visions and intentions.” The banner will be displayed at various locations in Lake County following the event.

Lake FRC’s California HOPE is a short term community based project ending August 31, 2019. It’s mission is to help Lake County residents recover from recent wildfires. Outreach workers provide free and confidential services to individuals, families, groups and organizations impacted by recent fires, including information and linkage to resources, emotional support, education, and community networking opportunities. Additionally, free workshops and educational presentations exploring the phases and reactions to disasters are available to groups, schools, businesses and organizations. Services are provided by Lake FRC through a grant from Lake County Behavioral Health Services.
