Join Jim Steele on Wednesday, August 14 at 7 pm, for the first in a series of five presentations for his class, “A Brief Natural History of Lake County.”

Jim Steele has an extensive professional background.  He is a former Lake County Supervisor, University of Sacramento State adjunct professor, State biologist, registered professional forester, ecological programs manager, and environmental consultant with 45 years experience analyzing ecosystem problems.  He’s a frequent featured columnist in the Record-Bee, often speaks at clubs and organizations around the lake and is a regular guest on local radio, KPFZ, 88.1 FM.

“The natural history of Lake County is a rich and diverse tapestry of climate, global geology, volcanic, watershed, wildlife and forest land formations along with human interventions that make up our backyard paradise,” said Steele.  “The class is a survey of the natural history of Lake County, from our formation and evolution to the forces and species that shaped the land and watershed we call home.”

In the first session, Steele said “I’ll take you back in time – to the beginning – for perspective.  Then jump right into the basics of ecology – what Lake county ecological systems are and their importance to the landscape – right up to our doorsteps and the conditions for the next fires.”

Future sessions will include segments on fire history, Native American history, climate change impacts on Lake County, and present day efforts to manage human impacts.  The class on Native American history will feature Dr. John Parker, local archeologist and a guest appearance and reading by Gene Paleno, noted local author and historian.

Each of the five, two-hour classes will include a break in the middle and opportunity for questions and answers.

No prior education or knowledge is required to attend this class.  There is a $125 charge that directly benefits the New Paradigm College; scholarships and partial scholarships are available. To enroll online or request a scholarship visit the college website at www.newparadigmcollege.org
