LAKEPORT — St. Helena Carpy Gang fans late in arriving to Saturday night’s Mendo-Lake Empire Junior Football League varsity game with the Westshore Junior Cardinals at Don Owens Stadium missed a pretty Decent performance.
Jonathon Decent, the Junior Cardinals’ quarterback, passed for a touchdown and ran for two others on Westshore’s first three possessions while leading his undefeated team to a 32-16 victory.
The Junior Cardinals (5-0) scored so fast against the Carpy Gang that their heads must have been spinning. Decent’s 47-yard touchdown pass to Jake Soderquist on Westshore’s first place from scrimmage made it 6-0. After recovering an onside kick, the Junior Cardinals scored again on a Decent 73-yard run. On Westshore’s next possession, Decent scored on 17-yard run to cap a 56-yard drive.
Westshore added to its 18-0 lead in the second quarter, first on a Decent 17-yard run with William Henry making the conversion kick (worth two points in youth football), then again on a Decent 39-yard run set up by a Soderquist interception to make it 32-0.
St. Helena scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters and added the conversion kick after both to round out the scoring.
Decent finished the game with 179 yards rushing.
On defense, Hank Ollenberger had five tackles and Isiah Reed added four more.
“After a rough week of practice the kids came to the game focused and ready to play,” head coach Derek Butcher said. “We played a very business-like and clean game. We are most proud about the fact that we only had two penalties for 15 yards. We are getting better one game at a time.”
Westshore’s teams host Willits this coming Saturday.
In other action Saturday:
Kelseyville 16, Willits 6 (varsity)
At Willits, Daniel Anderson-Reyes sacked the Willits quarterback three times as the defensive line of the Kelseyville Chiefs turned in another dominating performance while beating Willits.
Kelseyville (4-1) also received strong play up front from Roberto Tapia while linebackers Ricky Campos and Demetrio Boyd led the team with nine and seven tackles, respectively.
The Chiefs’ first touchdown came on a Tyler Bryant 12-yard catch with Jose Carmen adding the conversion kick for an 8-0 lead. Ricky Campos scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter with Carmen against adding the kick for a 16-0 lead.
Kelseyville 13, Willits 6 (JV)
At Willits, Kelseyville’s junior varsity squad improved to 2-3 on the season thanks to a strong effort on defense from the likes of Lucas Carr, Ryan Keithly and Micheal Dougherty.
On offense, Kimo Brown, Max Lee and Micheal Dougherty led the Chiefs in rushing yards. Dougherty ran in the Chiefs’ first touchdown, then a pass from quarterback Maddox Velez-Pounds to Max Lee put the Chiefs ahead for good.
Kelseyville 25, Willits 19 (PeeWee)
In a nail-biter between two evenly matched teams, it was a Case Pivniska touchdown run on a weak-side toss that snapped a 19-19 tie and lifted the Kelseyville PeeWee squad to a dramatic victory. The Chiefs snapped the ball with three seconds remaining in the game and time had expired when Pivniska crossed the goal line.
Both teams are 3-2 on the season.
Pivniska scored all four of the Chiefs’ touchdowns, but none more dramatic than the last one when he followed the blocking of fellow running back Walker Ryan into the end zone for the win.
Pivniska and Ryan were the Chiefs’ leading rushers.
On defense, several Kelseyville players stood out. Arelious Santos had six tackles for losses while Logan Walsh sacked the quarterback three times and had a fourth-down tackle that stopped a Willits drive on downs.
Also for the Chiefs, Angelo Mora had two sacks and two tackles for losses, Deake Lyndall intercepted two passes, and Pivniska and Hugh O’Boyle were among the team’s tackle leaders.
Kelseyville’s teams are home Saturday to play St. Helena.
Middletown 40, Fort Bragg 6 (varsity)
Middletown 44, Fort Bragg 18 (JV)
Middletown 32, Fort Bragg 0 (PeeWee)
At Middletown, a good season for the Middletown Colts teams got a little bit better as all three scored lopsided wins over visiting Fort Bragg at Bill Foltmer Field.
Middletown’s varsity improved to 4-1, Middletown’s JVs remained undefeated at 5-0, and Middletown’s PeeWees (5-0) also stayed perfect on the season.
In the JV game, Middletown beat an undefeated Fort Bragg squad that allowed only 13 points in its previous four games.
Middletown’s teams are at Lower Lake on Saturday.
Lower Lake 40, Upper Lake 25 (varsity)
At Lower Lake, the Upper Lake Junior Cougars fell to 1-4 overall after losing in varsity action to Lower Lake (2-3).
Ben Beecher scored three of Upper Lake’s four touchdowns and Jerod Rosales passed for more than 100 yards. Delaney Allison caught three passes and scored the Junior Cougars’ other touchdown.
“Vincent Stevenson had a strong game offensively and defensively,” said Upper Lake coach William Van Der Weken, who added that James Uden was the team’s top player on defense.
“The team is coming along nicely, they’re getting strong and stronger every game,” Van Der Weken said.
Upper Lake’s teams are home Saturday to play Fort Bragg.
