TOMALES — Escaping the 100-degree heat of Lake County, the Upper Lake High School girls soccer team traveled to Tomales in Marin County where the temperature was an unseasonably high 80 degrees on Wednesday afternoon, not that the Cougars were complaining.
However, the host Braves didn’t seem to be enjoying themselves.
“They asked for a water break during the game and we usually don’t take one (in Upper Lake) if the temperature is below 90 degrees,” Upper Lake coach Daniella Santana said following the Cougars’ 5-0 victory over the Braves in North Central League III action.
“My girls were like, ‘Why are we taking a water break?’” Santana said. “They (Braves) were a lot more tired than we were.”
Santana conceded it was hotter than it usually is in Tomales, but she said compared to the weather conditions in Lake County it was a fine day to play an early autumn game.
Upper Lake sophomore Karlee Zimmerschied wasn’t affected by the temperature as she scored three of the Cougars’ goals and assisted on another. Vanessa Beccera-Lopez and Maddy Young also scored in the win. Young, Paige Pruett and Kathleen Lopez-Geary added assists.
Upper Lake kept the ball at Tomales’ end of the field nearly the entire way.
“We dominated for most of the game,” Santana said.
Tomales managed only five shots on goal.
The Cougars are off until next Wednesday when they host Laytonville at 5:45 p.m. It’s part of a NCL III doubleheader that day as the Upper Lake boys play Point Arena at 4 p.m.
