LAKEPORT — After going 4-0-2 in the preseason, the Clear Lake Cardinals find themselves in a big-time funk, a 3-1 loss to the Willits Wolverines only adding to their problems on Thursday in North Central League I boys soccer action at Lakeport.

Clear Lake is now 1-5 in league play and the Cardinals close out the first half of their schedule Tuesday on the road in St. Helena.

“Tuesday’s a big game and they know it,” Clear Lake coach Shaun Hornby said of his players. “We have got to get some (positive) results.”

For the second time this week, Clear Lake battled its opponent to a 0-0 halftime draw (the Cardinals fell 4-1 at home Tuesday to Fort Bragg). Willits finally broke through with two goals in the second half, at which point Ulices Valencia scored for the Cardinals to make it 2-1.

“We were attacking like crazy and had shots go off off the post and crossbar,” Hornby said. “They (Wolverines) were falling apart.”

An errant pass during one of those Clear Lake attacks set up a breakaway goal by the Wolverines that clinched the victory.

“We gave up two very silly goals to headers,” Tipton said. “We just can’t get a break. I don’t get it.”
