LOWER LAKE — The Lower Lake Trojans put another boys soccer regular season into the books on Thursday afternoon, falling 3-1 to the Fort Bragg Timberwolves at Gordon Sadler Field in Lower Lake.
Lower Lake finishes league play at 5-7-2 and the regular season at 7-7-3. The Trojans are looking into applying for an at-large berth into the North Coast Section playoffs, which begin early next month.
“It was a much closer game than 3-1,” said Lower Lake coach Marcus Humphrey, pointing to an own goal the Trojans accidentally scored for Fort Bragg early in the first half.
The Timberwolves picked up two more goals for a 3-0 halftime lead. Lower Lake got one of those goals back in the second half when Pedro Garrido scored off a corner kick by teammate Angelo Pelcastre.
“He’s a normally a defender but he came up to help out (on the corner kick),” Humphrey said of Garrido. “Angelo’s kick sailed right to him and he knocked it over people into the net.”
Lower Lake’s defense held the Timberwolves scoreless the rest of the way, but the Trojans’ offense was unable to generate additional goals.
Lower Lake honored its three seniors between games (the boys started at 4 p.m. followed by the girls at 5:45 p.m.). They were Gilberto Orozco, the team’s goalie, and midfielders Billy Melvin and Marco Garrido.
Whether or not the Trojans reach the playoffs as an at-large team, Humphrey will be back out coaching in a couple of weeks as he takes over as the school’s new varsity boys basketball coach.
