LAKEPORT — Ethan Maize scored 20 points and Zane Robinson added 10 more as the Clear Lake Cardinals used a 17-4 third quarter to pull away from the Upper Lake Cougars during a 55-29 season-opening junior varsity boys basketball victory on Tuesday night in Lakeport.
“They looked good,” Clear Lake coach Scott Persons said. “We’ve got some fundamentals to work on. We got through some opening jitters but after that we were fine.”
Clear Lake gradually pulled away from Upper Lake. The Cardinals led 11-8 after one quarter, 32-20 at halftime and 49-24 entering the fourth quarter.
Jack Daskam scored nine points for Clear Lake (1-0), which returns to action Tuesday in a North Coast Section Foundation game at Ukiah.
Josh Malicay’s seven points paced Upper Lake (0-1).
“We had great hustle and did a good job fighting,” Upper Lake coach Nick Williamson said.
Upper Lake returns to action as part of a four-game set Thursday against Anderson Valley in Boonville at 5 p.m.

At Lakeport, Heaven’Lee Loans Arrow tossed in 18 points, Maddy Young added eight and Madison Noble had seven to lead the Upper Lake Cougars to a non-league win over the Clear Lake Cardinals in the season opener for both teams.
Taylar Minnis helped out with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in the victory.
Rubi Ford’s 10 points led Clear Lake.
“For an all-freshmen team, they could have really took it to them and doubled the score, but it gave me the opportunity to play everyone,” Upper Lake coach Angelina Arroyo said. “They were slow out of the gate, but then I put Maddy and Heaven in and it changed the whole pace.”
Clear Lake led 7-4 after one quarter but Upper Lake held a 17-10 advantage by halftime. The Cougars took a 34-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
Upper Lake returns to action as part of a four-game set Thursday against Anderson Valley in Boonville. Tip-off is 3:30 p.m.
