HEALDSBURG — The Lower Lake Trojans couldn’t recover from a slow start in their season opener and fell 62-39 to the Healdsburg Greyhounds in non-league varsity girls basketball action Saturday afternoon at Smith Robinson Gym in Healdsburg.
Healdsburg built 15-5 lead in the first quarter and while Lower Lake (0-1) was able to keep the deficit to single digits through three quarters — 42-33 — the Greyhounds finally pulled away in the fourth quarter.
“I hit them with a lot of things and these are girls who didn’t play summer league, no AAU,” first-year Lower Lake coach Shannon Tubbs said. “They did pretty well considering.”
Tubbs, who has previously coached Lower Lake’s varsity boys, said the Greyhounds (2-0), playing their second game of the season, were a difficult opponent to face in a season opener.
“They have a senior heavy team, a 6-foot-plus center, a good point guard,” Tubbs said.
Lower Lake trailed by as many as 14 points in the first half before closing the gap to as few as seven points in the third quarter. Leading by nine entering the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds wasted no time putting the game away as they hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Tubbs emptied his bench at that point.
Samantha Hughes led the Trojans with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Alisha Jones added eight points and Kayla Doud had seven.
Lower Lake was scheduled to play Durham on Tuesday but that game has been postponed.
“We’re trying to reschedule,” Tubbs said.
Healdsburg won the junior varsity game 33-28. Scoring wasn’t reported.
