KELSEYVILLE
School threat averted
Monday morning after school busses were already en route to pick up students, the Kelseyville Unified School District (KVUSD) Office received news of a potential school-shooter threat at Mt. Vista Middle School. KVUSD staff immediately called the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, rerouted buses to a safe location, and locked down all KVUSD schools. Shortly thereafter, the Sheriff’s Department called to inform district personnel that the person of interest had been detained and the threat was nullified.
“Once we knew the person who made the threat was in custody, we reopened schools and resumed bus service,” Superintendent Dave McQueen said. “In this day and age, we take every threat seriously. I’d rather overreact and keep everyone safe than assume a threat is idle talk from a student looking for attention. I appreciate the Sheriff’s deputies’ swift response and the KVUSD staff’s professionalism in handling the situation.”
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, a 13-year-old male student of Mountain Vista Middle School had made threats to “shoot up” the school. At approximately 7 a.m. deputies were able to contact the student at his residence prior to him getting on the school bus and took him into custody. Law enforcement officials noted the student was not armed and deputies were able to determine that there was no further threat. The student was taken to the Lake County Probation Department for processing.
