LAKE COUNTY—District 1 Supervisor Moke Simon announced that beginning Wednesday evening, the Middletown Senior Center will serve as an overnight warming center.
Simon, who also serves as Chairman of Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California, is a leading voice in statewide efforts to responsibly mitigate wildfire risk and hold PG&E accountable for the consequences of repeated PG&E blackouts. According to information released by county officials, the availability of this center in Middletown “is a sign the voices of Lake County’s residents and leaders are being heard.”
“People and businesses in Middletown have been hit really hard by PG&E’s decisions to turn off our power again and again, and it is totally unacceptable,” said Simon. “The Middletown Library and Senior Center is a critical gathering place, and I am grateful county staff were able to partner with PG&E to install a generator at this important facility. A lot of people contributed to making that possible, and it really is a positive step.”
Officials noted that Middletown Senior Center has been open all day as a place for local seniors and others to come together. This evening and overnight, County residents affected by the Nov. 20 PG&E power outage will have a place to go to find community and escape the cold.
The overnight warming center will be open until 8 a.m. Thursday and staffed throughout the night by the County of Lake’s Care and Shelter Team. Cots, blankets and snacks will be provided.
“We still have a lot more work to do,” notes Simon, “but it is a great thing that those without power who really need a place to go tonight will have an option. I am proud to work with the many people who are making sacrifices to provide this important service.”
The Middletown Senior Center is located at 22223 CA-29, Middletown, CA 95461.
Forecast information from the National Weather System showed that the temperature in Middletown was expected to dip to a low of 37 degrees Wednesday and a high of 66 degrees on Thursday.
