LAKEPORT — The sixth annual Play It In Pink fundraiser Tuesday night at the Marge Alakszay Center in Lakeport raised nearly $5,000 for breast cancer awareness and support.

Terrace Middle School’s eighth-grade A-volleyball team took on members of the Terrace Middle School staff in the annual competition. All of this year’s proceeds — $4,264.25 raised by Terrace School players and $520 raised in donations at the door for a total of $4,784.25 — will be donated to Breast Cancer Navigation Services at Sutter Lakeside Hospital in Lakeport. The navigator serves as a personal guide throughout diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

Camrin Pivniska played for Terrace's eighth-grade A-volleyball team against the teachers. The back of her T-shirt reads "In this school no one fights alone."

Those current and past staff members at Terrace Middle School who are currently fighting breast cancer or who have battled it in the past and were in attendance Tuesday were honored before the best-of-five match, which the teachers won three games to none.

Players who raised the most money received prizes. They were Leyla Marcks ($1,472), Faith McIntire ($650), Atiana Patino ($337), Rylie Andrews ($316), Halley Escalara ($263) and Keira McCormack ($230).

Players and staff members were decked out in pink for the occasion, many wearing occasion-appropriate T-shirts with logos supporting those battling breast cancer, and colorful signs of support decorated the volleyball court from one end to the other.

The Play It In Pink fundraiser was originally scheduled for Oct. 30 but moved to Tuesday because of logistical complications arising from a nearly week-long PG&E power shutoff late last month.
