We have now arrived at your dogs’ favorite holiday. Thanksgiving. So many opportunities for fun, love, attention, and food! What kind of foods can Rover safely consume and what should Rover avoid all together?
Here is the list…….
Can have:
light meat turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, green beans, pumpkin, apple slices,
Should not have:
turkey skin, turkey bones, gravy, nuts, stuffing, mushrooms, fat trimmings, sage, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, nutmeg, chocolate, candied yams, butter, bread dough or alcohol.
Although some of these items may not be intentionally offered to your dog, guests that are not dog savvy can carelessly leave these items within your dogs reach. Some of the items on the list above can make your dogs tummy upset but others can be near fatal if not catastrophic. Chocolate, macadamia nuts, and xylitol found in gum and other products are very toxic and dogs can become very ill and even death can occur. Medication ingestions and alcohol and marijuana intoxications are more prevalent around the holidays as well. Keep purses, suitcases and travel bags from guests up and out of reach.
Know your local emergency vets that are available and open for the holiday.
Here is a list of medications and home remedies that you can give your dog for common illnesses and poisonings but they are not to be used in substitution for a call or a visit to your favorite Vet.
- Benedryl for allergies and itching.
- Buffered aspirin for pain relief.
- Dramamine for motion sickness.
- Hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting for non caustic ingestions. (My favorite).
- Kaopectate for diarrhea.
- Pepto Bismol for upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, gas.
Mineral oil for constipation, although canned pumpkin works great for this as well.
If you need to give your pup any of the above medications please research the proper dose for your dogs weight and consult your vet to confirm these symptoms your are treating is nothing of a more serious nature.
With all this said, go get your dog a nice batch of Bully Sticks or Stuff some Kongs and let them enjoy the holiday in the safety and comfort of their nice crate or pen during the holiday festivities. Have a wonderful and enjoyable and safe Thanksgiving.
