LOWER LAKE — They made it closer the second time around, but the Lower Lake Trojans still came up short in their rematch with the Healdsburg Greyhounds, falling 58-47 in non-league varsity girls basketball action Saturday in Lower Lake.

Lower Lake (0-2) fell 62-39 to Healdsburg in its season opener Nov. 16 in Healdsburg.

“Huge improvement,” Lower Lake coach Shannon Tubbs said when asked to compare the two games. “We implemented a press in the second quarter that really helped. We’re not big, but we’re athletic and quick. We need to use our speed when we can.”

Lower Lake again spotted Healdsburg a big lead in the first quarter, falling behind 19-5. The Trojans spent the remainder of the game playing catch-up and a 10-5 second quarter helped as they closed to 24-15 by halftime. It was still a nine-point game — 38-29 — going into the final period.

“It was a six-point game with two minutes left,” Tubbs said. “We missed a 3-pointer.”

Healdsburg rebounded the miss, came down the floor and scored while also drawing a foul. The Greyhounds completed the three-point play to go up by nine.

“It was between six and nine points the rest of the game,” Tubbs said.

Besides a 19-5 first quarter that put Lower Lake into an immediate hole, Tubbs said the Trojans also had a rough game making routine layups, something he said they practice all the time.

“We do so many layup drills,” he said. “We missed six to eight during the game, just uncontested, wide-open layups.”

Shelby Sapeta’s 17 points paced the Trojans, Kayla Doud added 12 more and Sam Hughes had nine. All three players hit a 3-pointer in the loss.

Lower Lake returns to action Thursday against Napa at 8:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Piner Tournament in Santa Rosa.
