UPPER LAKE — Upper Lake High School’s boys and girls wrestling teams got their 2019-20 season underway Saturday at different tournaments.

The boys went to James Logan High School in Union City for the Colt JV Tournament and sophomore team captain Bradley Sneathen won the 220-pound class with a 3-0 record, including a victory by pin in the championship match.

Another Upper Lake sophomore, Cody Banks, finished second at 138 pounds with a 2-1 record.

Other standouts were Rene Diaz, who went 3-1 for a third-place finish at 126 pounds, and Dylan Slater, who went 2-2 for a fourth-place finish at 126 pounds.

Girls

Upper Lake’s girls attended the Bear Bash at Menlo-Atherton High School on Saturday. Because of illness, injury and the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, only three Cougars were able to attend. The best finish went to sophomore Dena Loans-Arrow, who placed fourth at 131 pounds with a 1-3 record.

“She wrestled well against good competitors but made some mistakes,” Upper Lake head coach Joe Fernandez said.

Freshman Tatum Salas went 1-2 at 111 pounds, winning her final match by pin.

“This was our first tournament of the season, so now we have the jitters out of the way,” Fernandez said.

Next up for the Cougars is the Coastal Mountain Conference Novice Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Lower Lake High School.
