Yuba Community College bond measure announced

A $228.4 million bond proposal that would fund the Yuba Community College District, which has a location in Clearlake, will be put before voters on March 3 in the 2020 primary election.

The County of Lake released its official notice Wednesday that the general obligation bond measure ‘C’ will be voted on at the Tuesday, March 3, 2020 “consolidated presidential primary election.” Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. that day, the county wrote.

Funds from the Measure C bonds would go toward classroom and building construction at the district’s Yuba, Woodland, Colusa, Lake and Sutter locations, according to the text of the measure, which is available online at lakecountyca.gov.

In its notice, the county announces that arguments “for and against” Measure C may be submitted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13.

Arguments must be typed and submitted to the Lake County Registrar of Voters, the county writes.

“This has been determined to be a reasonable date based upon the time necessary to prepare and submit for printing in the Sample Book (EC § 9286(a)),” the county continues.

Arguments may not exceed 300 words, and no more than five signatures may appear with any argument, the county states.

Only one argument for and one argument against Measure “C” shall be selected for printing and distribution with the sample ballots. A rebuttal argument may be drafted by the selected argument authors by Dec. 20, the county continues to state.

For more details on the Measure C election process and how to submit arguments, contact the Lake County Registrar of Voters at (707-263-2372) in Room 209 of the Lake County Courthouse, 255 N. Forbes St., Lakeport.

Bountiful Boxes return

Looking for a uniquely Lake County gift to give this holiday season?  For the 10th year in a row, Bountiful Boxes are back!  Once again, the Lake County Hunger Task Force will be offering for sale local foodstuffs in a beautiful gift box.  The boxes contain all Lake County products, including comice pears, apples, walnuts, honey sticks, and either red or white wine, plus a limited number with olive oil. They are $50 each, and only 100 will be sold.

Conceived as a fundraising idea by Michelle Scully in 2010, as a benefit for the Hunger Task Force, they have proven to be popular holiday gifts, or simply food to share with friends.  They previously won a Star of Lake County award as best new idea.

The boxes will be available for pick up on Thursday, December 12 only, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Scully Packing in Finley.  Please contact Lorrie Gray at 277-9227 or hungertaskforce9@gmail.com to order or for more information. The Task Force is also looking for volunteers to help pack the boxes.

NORTHSHORE

Fire tax measure fails

Measure N, the proposed property tax increase that would have channelled funds to the Northshore Fire Department, raising annual taxes by varying amounts dependent on property type, received its final result on Monday.

The measure failed, according to an official document from the Lake County Registrar of Voters, with 37.1 percent of voters saying “no” to it. The tax would have needed 66.67 percent voter approval to pass—a two-thirds majority—and it came close, with 62.9 percent approval.

The registrar’s data shows that of the 1,989 voters in the Northshore district who cast ballots in the measure’s Nov. 5 special election, 1,251 of them voted “yes.”

Fire chief Mike Ciancio could not be reached for comment Thursday on what the tax’s failure means for the district.

KELSEYVILLE

Hotcakes for Heroes

Operation Tango Mike and the Kelseyville Lions will co-host “Hotcakes For Heroes” on Sunday, December 8.

The breakfast will feature hotcakes, along with choices of sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy.  Beverages include juice and coffee.  You may also order the deluxe version, by simply requesting “the works.”

Operation Tango Mike volunteers will take orders and serve patrons.

Santa will be at the event, so bring a camera!

The event will run from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Kelseyville Lions Club, 4335 Sylar Lane, with a suggested donation of $8.

Proceeds benefit Operation Tango Mike in the ongoing effort to ship monthly care packages to deployed military personnel.

Operation Tango Mike is approaching 17 years of supporting the troops and having shipped nearly 22,000 care packages.

Currently, monthly shipping fees alone average $1,900.  Coupled with the expense of care package supplies, the all-volunteer non-profit spends nearly $4,000 per month to send the much needed and appreciated care packages.
