LAKE COUNTY

2020 Resident Quagga Stickers are now available at all screening locations

The Lake County Quagga Sticker is required in addition to your DMV sticker for all Lake County vessels.

Remember to check in with a participating screener when you return from any out-of-county trips with your boat.  Our screeners stay up to date on counties in the western United States experiencing mussel infestations.  Re-screening, inspection or decontamination, when needed, are free.

Clean, drained, dry boats are safe boats. Display your sticker, protect your lake.

A few facts:

  • Quagga mussels are voracious feeders, and decimate phytoplankton (beneficial green algae), destabilizing aquatic food chains and threatening valuable fisheries.
  • Quagga mussels are filter feeders, drastically altering the chemistry and biology of the water ecosystem.
  • A single Quagga mussel can produce 20,000+ offspring in a season.
  • Beaches can become littered with piles of glass-sharp shells of dead mussels.
  • Common Quagga Mussel densities in the Great Lakes are 700,000 m2.
  • First introduced in 2005, densities in Lake Mead, Nevada, now exceed 10,000m2.  40% of the animal population in Lake Mead is now Quagga Mussels.
  • Quagga Mussels can colonize on hard and soft surfaces, mud, plants, docks, boat engine cooling systems, water pipes.
In other lakes, infestations have caused millions of dollars in maintenance, cleaning, and filtering needs in drinking water infrastructure.

For the latest list of screeners see www.nomussels.com or call Lake County Water Resources at 707 263-2344.
