SUSANVILLE — Playing their first game in 13 days and only their fourth game of the season, the Lower Lake Trojans beat the Colfax Falcons 56-44 in the opening round of the round-robin Mt. Lassen Tournament on Friday night in Susanville.

Lower Lake’s varsity boys squared their record at 2-2 behind 17 points from Semaj Clark, 15 from Vann Wilkins and 11 from Joseph Hughes. Makhi Johnson had eight points.

“We locked them down pretty well,” Lower Lake head coach Marcus Humphrey said of the strong defense played by the Trojans. “But our fouling got us into trouble in the fourth quarter. They’re a great free-throw shooting team.”

The Falcons scored most of their 19 fourth-quarter points at the line but never really made a serious run at the Trojans down the stretch, according to Humphrey.

“They got as close as nine,” he said.

Lower Lake gradually pulled away from Colfax. It was 16-15 after one quarter, 25-19 at halftime and 37-25 through three quarters.

“I’m happy with the way we played,” Humphrey said. “The guys made the adjustments they needed to.”

Lower Lake plays two more games on Saturday. First up is Mt. Shasta at noon followed by Lassen at 3:30 p.m.
