Nomination forms and category information can be found at www.lakecochamber.com with the deadline for nominations Monday, January 24  by close of business, or postmarked by January 24.

Currently we have received two student nominations; one for Professional Arts Award, one for Professional Youth Advocate, one for Woman of the Year and one for Lifetime Achievement.  All of us work with and volunteer with very deserving businesses, people and organizations that deserve to be recognized for the work they do to make life in Lake County special. Stars now stands at 22 available categories which accommodates so many of our wonderful Lake County residents, businesses and organizations.

Stars would not be possible without community sponsorships and we have many who have supported this program since it’s inception.  The list of 2020 sponsors will be posted soon.

If you have an interest in sponsoring an award, call the Chamber at 263-5092.

The Stars Selection Committee will be reviewing all nominations and will be meeting in mid-February to cast their secret ballot votes.  The Committee is comprised of 12 individuals from various areas of Lake County.

Tickets for Stars are available now through the office of the Lake County Chamber and are $25/person.  All Nominees are seated in the very front of the theater with one guest. Each Nominee will receive one free ticket to Stars.

Mendocino County superintendents tour Ukiah High School Career Technical Education classroom

Superintendents from Mendocino County school districts gathered last Friday at Ukiah High School (UHS) for their regular Superintendent’s Council meeting. Career Technical Education (CTE) was the topic of the day, and they took a tour to learn about the wide variety of CTE programs that UHS offers.

“I was overwhelmingly impressed by the quality and variety of CTE programs that Ukiah High School has to offer. In today’s world, career education is critically important for our students, and it is great to see the largest comprehensive high school in Mendocino county with such a wide variety of options for our students,” said Michelle Hutchins, MCOE Superintendent.

UHS offers 16 different CTE Pathways that prepare local students for a career in a related field. Pathways include Automotive Technology, Animal Science, Automotive Mechanics, Child Development, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), Computer Science, Fashion, Health Occupations, Horticulture, Photography, Sustainable Agriculture, Welding, and Residential and Commercial Construction.

According to the California Department of Education, Career Technical Education is a program of study that involves a multiyear sequence of courses that integrate core academic knowledge with technical and occupational knowledge to provide students with a pathway to postsecondary education and careers.

There are also several student leadership organizations that are active within the UHS CTE program like Future Farmers of America (FFA), Future Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and Skills USA. To find out more about Ukiah High School’s CTE Programs, visit www.ukiahhigh.uusd.net/ and look under the Academics tab, or call 707.472.5750.
