MIDDLETOWN — There weren’t many contested matches Wednesday evening as Middletown High School’s wrestling team hosted the Fort Bragg Timberwolves and Cloverdale Eagles in a Coastal Mountain Conferencee tri-meet at Middletown High School, but the Mustangs won enough of them to open the dual-meet season at 2-0.

“I can’t complain about that,” Middletown head coach Brian Hunt said. “Fort Bragg is rebuilding and Cloverdale doesn’t have many wrestlers, but they have some good, athletic kids.”

Middletown defeated Fort Bragg 54-27, winning four of the seven contested weight classes and receiving a handful of forfeits. The Mustangs beat Cloverdale 37-11, winning all four of the contested weight classes.

Fort Bragg

Shane Guill bumped up from 132 pounds to win his 138-pound match by third-round pin and looked impressive in the process, according to Hunt.

“We had a bunch of kids go up a weight class and Shane did really well,” Hunt said.

Also moving up was Joziah Pyzer, normally a 145-pounder who scored a second-round pin in the 152-pound class.

“He was giving up 9-10 pounds to his opponent,” Hunt said.

Middletown 160-pounder Anthony Nudi needed only 38 seconds to win by pin, and Jacob Perry also scored a first-round pin at 182 pounds against a Fort Bragg wrestler who won the 182-pound title earlier this month at the Dennis Jensen Invitational in Middletown.

Middletown's Joziah Pyzer, wrestling up a weigh class at 152 pounds, circles his Fort Bragg opponent earlier in their match.

In other contested matches, Andrew Mikel dropped a 9-4 decision at 120 pounds, Ruben Cortez lost by third-round pin at 145 pounds, and Johnny Reyes lost by second-round pin at 170 pounds.

“We didn’t give up any points we could prevent,” Hunt said.

Cloverdale

Guill notched his second win of the night with a first-round pin of Cloverdale’s David Alvarez in the third meeting this season between the two 132-pounders. The rubber match was thoroughly dominated by Guill, according to Hunt.

“I’m quite happy with the way he wrestled,” Hunt said.

James Hernandez pinned his opponent in the first round at 220 pounds while 113-pound Xander Romero scored a 12-0 major decision.

Middletown's Joziah Pyzer puts the finishing touches on a second-round pin.

In the only other contested match, Middletown’s Filemon Sanchez won 7-6, avenging a loss to the same Cloverdale wrestler earlier this month at the Dennis Jensen Invitational.

Schedule

Middletown’s junior varsity and varsity boys head to the Eureka Tournament on Saturday. The Mustangs’ next conference match is a tri-meet against Clear Lake and Upper Lake next Wednesday in Lakeport.
