EUREKA >> Xander Romero of the Middletown High School wrestling team allowed only two points in three matches, winning all of them in the 113-pound division Saturday at the Eureka Tournament.
Romero’s first-place finish included a 7-0 decision over Marley Harris of Arcata in the finals, a battle of two North Coast Section-ranked wrestlers – Romero is No. 4 and Harris is No. 7.
“Xander was dominant,” Middletown head coach Brian Hunt said. “He wrestled hard, he wrestled smart.”
Romero and Harris met earlier this month, Romero winning 11-9 in the finals of the Dennis Jensen Invitational at Middletown.
The Mustangs won three other varsity medals at Eureka. Filemon Sanchez (126 pounds), Anthony Nudi (160) and Jacob Perry (182) all finished fourth.
Just finishing out of the medal hunt was Andrew Mikel, who was sixth at 120 pounds.
In the junior varsity division, Anthony Mikel came in first in the 126-pound pool division, and Parker Boden placed second at 126 pounds.
Other second-place finishes went to Jackson Bomberry (145), Johnny Reyes (170) and Donny Turknett (220).
“The kids went up there and performed very well,” Hunt said of the Mustangs, who placed eighth as a team despite taking only half of their varsity squad to Eureka. “All in all the kids had a fun day.”
