UKIAH — Mavis and Ashley Pyorre of the Clear Lake High School wrestling team spent the first part of Saturday winning their respective weight classes at the Redwood Empire Classic in Ukiah, then had to make a quick change to attend the school’s winter formal later that evening.

Part of a 21-wrestler Clear Lake contingent taking part in the Ukiah tournament for girls and boys, the Pyorres were the only Cardinals to bring home first-place medals. The girls also placed second as a team behind Fortuna.

“This weekend the Cardinals took on their first big varsity tournament and the young team did very well despite facing much older and experienced opponents,” Clear Lake head coach Nathan Powers said. “It’s all a part of the process. All year we have trained and developed our skills. Now the kids have seen what the new standard is as they continue to evolve in the sport.”

Girls

Ashley Pyorre, a freshman, continues to impress, according to Powers. She went 2-0 with one pin at 101 pounds.
“Ashley has continued to show an intensity and dedication to her sport that continues to breed success,” Powers said.

Mavis Pyorre, a senior, was no less impressive as she pinned all three of her opponents at 116 pounds.

“Mavis had some tough competition but with senior experience kept her wits and controlled her matches,” Powers said.

Second-place medals went to Tara Wong at 101 pounds and Ximena Soto at 126 pounds.

Boys

The Cardinals had one boy take home a medal in the varsity division as heavyweight Dominic Legendre, a senior, had an intense third-place match to close out the tournament. Unable to capture the victory, he ended up fourth and received a standing ovation for a hard-fought and exciting match. He finished the tournament 2-2 with one pin.

In the junior varsity boys division, Quinlan Burke finished second at 285 pounds with a record of 2-1 with one pin, Drake Chesebro placed third at 220 pounds with a 3-1 record and three pins, and Victor Ortega placed fifth at 120 pounds with a 2-2 record.

Also for the Cardinals, Liam Davis went 3-2 with two pins in the gold bracket of the varsity division.

Clear Lake hosts Cloverdale in a Coastal Mountain Conference dual match Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
