MARIETTA, GA.  Less than a year after winning a state championship at Upper Lake High School, Adriana Lopez of the Campbellsville Lady Tigers wrestling team has been accorded All-American honors after placing fourth in the 123-pound division at the 2020 Women’s College Wrestling Association National Championships held Saturday and Sunday in Marietta, Georgia.

Lopez, a freshman at the Kentucky school, also helped lead the Lady Tigers, a NAIA program, to their second national championship in three years. Campbellsville sent 15 wrestlers to this year’s National Championships and 13 of them finished in the top eight of their respective weight classes to secure All-American status.

Campbellsville won the team title in a runaway, beating its next closest competitor, tournament host Life University, 230-113. Jameston University (North Dakota) finished third with 111.5 points.

The Lady Tigers also had three invidiual national champions in 130-pounder Abby Nette, 170-pounder Mariah Harris and 191-pounder Alexander Castillo as well as five runner-up wrestlers. In the last seven years the Campbellsville program has produced 11 individual national champions.

Lopez won her first two matches by 12-2 and 8-0 decisions before losing to Vayle-rae Baker of Augsburg, Minnesota, in the 123-pound semifinals. She later lost 6-2 to Kassidy Block of Adrian, Michigan, in the third-place match.

In 2019, Lopez became the first Lake County high school athlete to win a state title in any CIF-sanctioned sport when she captured the 121-pound division at the CIF State Championships. Her singlet was later retired by Upper Lake and is now featured on the gymnasium wall along with the retired basketball numbers of three other Upper Lake greats, Laura Wilder, Jennifer Bryant and Annie Pivniska (Petrie), who is now the school’s principal.
