MONTE RIO — Lalo Sepulveda’s nine-hole round of 46 led the Kelseyville High School golf team in a season-opening loss to the El Molino Lions Thursday at Northwood Golf Course in Monte Rio.
First opened in 1928, the par-36 Northwood course is ranked as the third-best nine-hole course in America by Golfweek Magazine.
El Molino beat Kelseyville 180-207, with the low four rounds for each school making up the team total.
Trevor Rivas (41) and Callum Brown (44) of El Molino posted the day’s low rounds followed by Sepulveda.
Also for the Knights, Cory Holt carded a 48, Sarah Parlee had a 55, and Gordo Ambriz finished at 58.
“It was a beautiful day at Northwood with temperatures in the high-50s,” Kelseyville golf coach John Berry said. “The course was in great shape and it was a good opening match for KHS to be able to play a course of note.”
Added Berry on Kelseyville’s season-opening performance, “While there is some room for improvement, especially with their short games, the varsity golfers at Kelseyville have high expectations for 2020 and hope to end up qualifying for North Coast Sections as an at-large team this year.”
Kelseyville opens its Coastal Mountain Conference South schedule next Thursday at Rooster Run Golf Course in Petaluma. Other CMC South teams are Middletown, St. Helena, St. Vincent, Credo and Technology.
