LAKEPORT— The 1970 drama, “Five Easy Pieces,” starring Jack Nicholson and Karen Black, screens at the Soper Reese Theatre on Tuesday, April 14, at 1 and 6 p.m. Entry to the film is by donation.

This film creates a haunting portrait of alienation that features one of Nicholson’s greatest performances and is his first leading role. As an angry, insubordinate smart mouth who works as an oil-rigger and finds himself trapped in a toxic relationship with a diner waitress and would-be country singer, Nicholson’s protagonist finds he must return to the family home to see his dying father, and it’s there we are surprised to learn he’s turned his back on a promising career as a classical pianist. Directed by Bob Rafelson and Dennis Hopper, “Five Easy Pieces” earned four Oscar nominations, for Best Picture, Actor, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay.

The movie is sponsored by Mike Bielenberg and Val Schweifler. Rated R for adult situations and language. Run time is 1 hour and 38 minutes. The Soper Reese Theatre is located at 275 S. Main St., Lakeport, 707-263-0577, soperreesetheatre.com.
