MIDDLETOWN — Middletown Unified School District has named Michael Cox as its next superintendent.

Cox will begin working in his new role on July 1. He is currently the principal of the Alternative Education Center in Silver Valley Unified School District in Southern California.

The MUSD board of trustees said it is “excited to welcome Michael to MUSD. He brings with him leadership skills that foster a spirit of teamwork and we feel he will integrate well into our exceptional staff.”

Cox’s selection was the result of what the district called an “intensive search” that produced “many qualified applicants from diverse geographic and professional backgrounds.”

The district noted, “We are extraordinarily pleased with the outcome of this search process. In the end, Michael Cox proved himself the best fit to carry forward the vision of the District. His track record of driving academic excellence, along with his passion for working with students and families, demonstrates his capability to succeed in this new role.”

Cox holds a master’s degree of Arts in Educational Administration from Brandman University, and a bachelor’s of science from Utah State University. Cox also holds professional development credentials, including Association of California School Administrators certificates in personnel and business. Most recently, Cox completed the Fiscal Crisis Management Assistance Team’s Chief Business Official Mentor Program.

“I am honored to have been chosen for this position,” said Cox. “I am grateful to serve in this capacity. I will work collaboratively, with an emphasis on teamwork and a ‘students first’ mindset, to continue moving the district in a positive direction and improving the educational outcomes for all of our students.”

Cox will replace Dave Miller in the superintendent’s position. The MUSD elected Miller as Interim District Superintendent in October after firing former superintendent Catherine Stone for reasons that were never disclosed publicly by the district, which cited privacy concerns surrounding the “personnel matter.” Stone had joined the district in 2015. Upon hiring Miller, the district indicated that it would continue to search for permanent superintendent candidates.
